Old Pulteney has a unique connection with the sea. Pulteney Distillery is located in Wick where thousands of fishermen used to sail out to brave one of the most rugged sea channels along the British coastline. It was the risk they took and the warming dram that awaited them upon return that was the motor of our operation when casks of Old Pulteney were first rolled out of the warehouses and this deep connection and respect for those who work at sea remains at the heart of what we do today. In fact, we feel we owe much of the global success we enjoy today to seafarers. Wick Harbour used to be our only window onto the world and now, although we no longer bring supplies and ship whisky out this way, sailing adventurers, professional seamen and women and members the sailing community worldwide remain some of the staunchest advocates for the Maritime Malt, carrying the story of our rich heritage to the four corners of the world.
Now it’s time to give back.
We are extremely proud to announce the launch of our partnership with The Mission to Seafarers, a global charity that cares for 1.5 million men and women who face danger each day working at sea. We will donate £1 from every bottle of Old Pulteney 12 Year Old sold this year, aiming to raise at least £30,000. The money will help The Mission to Seafarers provide counsel and friendship to merchant seafarers, whether they are stranded, isolated or just far from home. The help will encompass a range of activities, from simply offering a warm welcome in port to organising ship visiting programmes, providing wi-fi in port locations helping ship crews communicate with their loved ones back home, to the complex task of providing counsel and help in emergency situations. The charity’s invaluable work is carried out in 260 ports around the world.
The Mission to Seafarers’ Director General Andrew Wright said:
“We are thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside Old Pulteney Single Malt Scotch Whisky which has a long and prestigious heritage connected with sea trade in the former fishing town of Wick. The Mission’s history of providing a vital lifeline to seamen and women in need since 1856 all over the world makes our association a strong one and we look forward to working with the distillery where tradition, quality and superb craftsmanship have been maintained and cherished to this day.”
Special charity packs will be on shelves in the UK and other key markets from May. In addition, we will bring this partnership to life through a range of activities and events throughout the year.
We hope Old Pulteney fans and the whisky community in general will help us reach our target and support this worthy cause.
