In Scotland we’re rstarting to feel the gentle warm touch of Spring. The days are longer, the sun shines more often and we feel a spring our our step here at the distillery as we roll our casks across the courtyard into the filling store. But does the warmer weather mean the whisky-drinking season is over? Not on our watch.
While many people associate drinking single malts with cold weather, snow or winter holidays, a tasty and well-balanced whisky is perfect just about any time of the year. The difference may be in your approach to the drinking occasion or the serve. Let’s have a quick look at some suggestions for Spring/Summer 2014.
Having a generous dram by the fire with your legs stretched out and a great book in the non-dramming hand is great but when the birds are singing and the warmth in the air is calling you to come outside and play, there is no reason why you should leave your whisky behind. A small dram will go a long way at a picnic or when walking a dog. If walking around with a Glencairn glass in your hand is not acceptable where you are, consider a hipflask (explore our article on whisky from a hipflask by clicking here).
We love Old Pulteney 21 Year Old as much as you do. But there is time and place for every Old Pulteney expression and while the award-winning 21 is just about the perfect after-dinner treat, a more youthful dram may work just as well, if not better, earlier in the day when the sun is shining. Try Old Pulteney Navigator for its fresh, crisp, bright and punchy character. It delivers great value for money and the citrusy overtones will put you in the mood for all things Spring.
Remember that great whisky is meant to be enjoyed, not just sampled. If you like, pair it with good food, serve it over ice or even in a great cocktail. We promise not to tell anyone.
Whenever we’re asked how we drink our whisky, the answer is ‘with friends’. It’s not always true. Sometimes you need a solitary dram to unwind and relax. But Spring definitely brings out the pack animal in us and that’s why right now is the perfect time to share some Pulteney. Organise a get-together with friends from school, re-activate your band or build up the courage and finally ask that girl from the coffee shop out for a drink. Whisky brings people together.
